Roofing Books

What's new in the second edition? The original book was 287 pages; the second edition, despite serious space saving efforts, will total about 320 pages. The original 2 part book is now a 3 part book: Understanding Slate Roofs, Installing Slate Roofs, and Restoring Slate Roofs. The book will have 21 chapters instead of the original 15. New chapters include European Slating Methods, International Roof Slate, Roof Inscriptions and Designs, plus separate chapters for Flashing, for Recycling Slate Roofs, for Chimneys, and for Valleys, and an additional catch-all chapter for miscellaneous roofing systems often associated with slate roofs (such as soldered-seam copper roofs and ceramic tile roofs). You will now find illustrated sections on eyebrow dormers, rounded valleys, turrets, and other interesting roof details unique to slate roofs. You will also find approximately 361 photographs (195 in the 1st edition) and over 229 illustrations (175 in the 1st edition) adorning our new book, including a host of step-by-step installation, maintenance, repair and restoration drawings, as well as many photos showing the inimitable beauty that only a slate roof can display. And best of all, the entire book is printed in color. You can't do justice to slate roofs in black and white!

In addition to complete installation information, the book includes comprehensive methods for repairing problems with existing surfaces, as well as routine finishing and refinishing information.

Buying and Maintaining a Home with a Slate Roof: Guide to Inspections, Contractors and Repairs for Home Owners and Property Managers Asphalt is the most common roofing material in North America. This book is an in-depth guide to working with it — whether the reader is a professional installing a brand-new roof or a do-it-yourselfer simply making necessary repairs. A guide to the process of designing and installing a green roof—essential reading for anyone interested in energy-efficient buildings Environmentally friendly buildings are a must for the future, and among the many new ideas for buildings are green roofs—but what exactly is a green roof, and how do they work? Why are individuals and businesses installing them, and how difficult is it to install and maintain a green roof? This guide introduces the range of green roofs available, from the small garden shed to towering skyscrapers; discusses the role of the green roof as part of an overall greening of a building and landscape; advises on types of vegetation to be grown, maintenance required, and problems that can be encountered; analyzes the green roof movement; and describes residential and business case studies from across the world. With contributions from builders, architects, and gardeners, this is not a self-help manual, as most green roofs will need a string of professionals, but a guide to the process of designing and installing a green roof. Until now, the green roof movement has been limited to large-scale, professional endeavors and public buildings. But homeowners everywhere are catching onto the benefits of a green roof—water conservation, energy savings, and storm water management. In Small Green Roofs authors Dunnett, Gedge, Little, and Snodgrass profile ordinary homeowners who scaled green roofs down to the domestic level. Small Green Roofs is the first book to focus on small-scale and domestic green roofs. More than forty profiles of small and domestic-scale projects of all shapes and sizes include green roofs on sheds, garden offices, studios, garages, houses, bicycle sheds, and other small structures, as well as several community projects. For each project, details are given for design, construction, and installation, as well as how-to tips on how the roof was planted and cared for. For readers looking for inspiration when hiring a contractor or taking the adventurous step of building their own, Small Green Roofs provides the knowledge and encouragement to make it possible. Full of detailed construction drawings, this book covers cut roofs, bolted truss roofs, trussed rafter roofs, trimmed openings and ventilation. A major section deals with loft to attic room conversions, giving guidance on planning procedures, as well as dealing with structural matters and specifying conversion work. The Fourth Edition features a new chapter covering the growing number of engineered timber components available in the house building industry. The use of I beams and roof cassettes is detailed for roof and room-in-the-roof construction. The text has been fully updated to current standards and features additional detailed construction drawings. The chapters on attic conversion and construction have been expanded and a new attic conversion decision flow chart added. The book will prove invaluable to architects, house builders, roof carpenters, building control officers, trussed rafter manufacturers and students of building technology.
